On the death of Asma Jahangir, the Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights, Bärbel Kofler, declares today (12.02): We are mourning the loss of Asma Jahangir.The lawyer, born in 1952, was the most prominent human rights activist in Pakistan.
Since the 1980s, she has worked tirelessly for democracy and human rights in her native Pakistan. She was co-founder of the nationwide known Human Rights Commission of Pakistan . As the leading representative of the Lawyers’ Movement, she worked with great courage for the rule of law and democratization.
Also internationally, Asma Jahangir gained a great reputation – for example as a United Nations Special Rapporteur on Religious Freedom. Asma Jahangir died on 11.02.2018 at the age of 66 years in Lahore.
Asma Jahangir’s death is a huge loss for Pakistan and the human rights movement. She was one of her most formative personalities! We will miss her painfully
